At a crucial time when sustainability is a necessity for the world, we’re making a difference by enabling circular economies with technology to help reduce single-use waste. We, Circulayo, are leading a green revolution from Derby to help businesses increase their sustainability efforts.
Nowadays, 66% of shoppers are looking for brands and businesses to be eco-conscious, highlighting the need for brands and businesses to adapt to meet the needs of consumers. Although people globally are beginning to change habits and take sustainability seriously, our planet can no longer keep up with our wasteful and destructive habits.
The Urgency for Change and a Sustainable Future
Climate change is escalating quicker as days go by with greenhouse gases continuing to rise at a rapid pace – did you know that there is more carbon dioxide in our atmosphere currently than at any point in human history? This is causing the Earth to warm, meaning that extreme heat events are more frequent and severe than ever; it is likely the rate of these events will increase again from 2.8 times every 10 years to 4.1 times every 10 years.
To limit these devastating events from occurring, we need to cut the amount by 7.6% each year to prevent warming from going beyond 1.5°C. This will mean reducing greenhouse emissions created through travel, manufacturing, and disposal. Our disposal habits are not working.
Over 12 million tonnes of plastic end up in oceans annually, which will increase as only 9% of plastic is recycled and only 6% of all plastic production is made from recycled plastics.
Although the remanufacture of plastics has quadrupled over the past few decades, an improvement is needed to reduce plastic pollution. But how does this work? Rethinking how we design, manufacture, and dispose of plastic products and packaging is a key concept to improve sustainability and enable a circular economy that combats a circular economy.
The circular economy is designed to minimise waste and maximise resources using principles such as recycling, reusing, and remanufacturing. A closed-loop cycle allows for products to be repurposed to minimise the environmental impact we have on the planet. Circular economies provide a large opportunity for businesses to expand current and new markets, reduce costs and risks, innovation, and new expectations from consumers.
At Circulayo, we are big advocates for the circular economy. Our technology is designed to enhance circular economies no matter the scale, from region-wide projects to individual business needs.
Circulayo; On A Mission to Reduce Single-Use Waste
After much look into how technology could advance sustainability, we discovered that the current infrastructure needed to be re-evaluated and re-designed. With many attempts at implementing new systems failing, we decided to use technology to aid in the seamless implementation of eco-conscious choices without disrupting routines and habits.
Circulayo was created in 2021 after a trial was carried out for track-and-trace technology during the Covid-19 pandemic for the University of Chester’s reusable containers. With a strong result, Circulayo was born with a mission to save the planet using technological innovation.
AppNostic and The Flow Platform
We use technology to help businesses be sustainable, and at the heart of this is the Flow Platform and AppNostic. Both technologies can be used together or separately.
AppNostic integrates with everyday life by affixing a QR code to reusable products. This allows users to effortlessly access sustainability insights and rewards through a quick scan, eliminating the need for app downloads. Create a lasting relationship with consumers and reward them for engaging with sustainability.
By providing on-the-go information and rewards, AppNostic empowers consumers to make eco-conscious choices without compromising convenience. AppNostic builds the bridge between consumers and environmental responsibility, holding consumers and businesses accountable in the journey to a sustainable future.
The Flow Platform stands as the backbone of Circulayo's mission. Our system creates a closed-loop approach to supply chains, infusing sustainability at every stage. The platform facilitates a seamless flow of information, resources, and products, optimising product lifecycle.
It empowers businesses to adopt circular economy principles, promoting durability, repairability, and recycling. With the Flow Platform, companies can align their operations with eco-friendly practices, fostering not just environmental benefits but also ensuring long-term economic resilience.
Our Impact So Far
So now you know what Circulayo is and why we exist, how have we made an impact?
We have worked with various businesses around Derby to make a large impact on sustainability within Derby. We have helped save over 3 tonnes of single-use plastic and 10 tonnes of CO2e from entering our environment. That has been created by the reuse of over 150 thousand items, with an average return rate of 94%.
Since 2021, the support and involvement have been outstanding, and the impact we have been able to support and create is due to collaboration with both businesses and their consumers as they believe in a sustainable world. Using our technology solutions, it can be adopted by all businesses to continue to make an impact, not just in Derby, but around the world.
“The engagement from supporters has been really strong, and that’s vital to make any scheme like this work”. – Andy Flinn, CEO of Circulayo.
Alone, Circulayo cannot change the whole planet, but we can contribute to how people implement sustainability into everyday life. This is just the beginning. Join us in our mission.
